My last F5C side bound (July 9, '23) mandolin being distressed.

Image

Tailpiece, tuners and all the screws dipped in PC etchant and rinsed off. Wear in the proper places (not too much) and the famous F5 crack (fake). Also barely visible around the recurve is some spiderwebbing of the varnish (done with egg whites).

Image

Stew Mac tuners that used to be shiny nickel (still shiny in a few spots) and screw slots messed up. Mop Buttons slightly yellowed in spots, a few nicks in Peg head back...

Image

Peg head front with just a few little nicks so far.

Image

Back (with inadvertent thumb print on button).

Absolutely beautiful.

One of my first projects when my shop is up and running again will be an A-Style mando, can't wait.

Unusual burst on the first back...
Just seal coats and you will pull the tape?

Thanks Haans. The burst looks uneven in the photo probably from the flash. When viewed in hand the look is much different. It is water based dye rubbed in then sealed with sprayed shellac. I will pull the tape after several shade coats go on. Matt

Yea, I hate flashes...
So, you apply a light WB dye and then shade the rest with dyed shellac?

I first spray the WB trans tint dye on bare wood. I then rub the dye in with a damp cloth. Then I spray clear shellac followed by shaded coats of shellac to even out the color and to darken the outer edge. The top coats will be target em2000wmx waterborne. I will post a few more pictures after I pull off the tape.

That is a beautiful mandolin you built. It must be difficult to distress such a pretty mandolin!

Nice mandolins! And now for something completely different... I finished installing a new bar in my local downtown. It's all guitars and ukes inlayed into veneered panels then covered with resin:

It's not open yet but the place is called 'Ruby Deluxe' and is next to the Sheraton downtown on Fayetteville St. They're doing final inspections now with the city folks and hopefully will be open in the next week or so.

Nah, the varnish is violin spirit over oil varnish and is pretty soft, so most instruments end up that way eventually.
When you distress the instrument, you can get away with less varnish, so it sounds a little better I think. It also becomes yer pal, you don't care who plays it, no worries about someone scratching it. After all, it's all about the tone. Just like a new car, after the first scratch, it's transportation.
Trick is not to go too far and just bang it up and make a mess. It's very easy to get carried away with distressing.
Then again...

All of these guitars were on my bench or benches you might say.
